Inspiration for Bubbling Starter
What is so special about sourdough? If you love bread, everything. It is arguably, the tastiest thing you will ever experience. The texture of the soft chewy crumb, the crunch of the crispy crust. Alone it is amazing, with butter, or a little olive oil and salt, even better.
Such a simple process, the mixing of flour and water and allowing it to ferment, lets the natural yeasts and Lactobacilli acid do so many wonderful things commercial yeast just can’t do. A sourdough culture breaks down the anti-nutrients found in grains, allowing for better absorption of the minerals present in the flour, it lowers the glycemic index of bread, breaks protein down to amino acids, and contains prebiotics to nourish your gut flora.
What is more nourishing and comforting than baking bread? Watching your symbiotic culture of wild yeast emerge from two simple ingredients. Once you start on your sourdough journey, you will feel the excitement of pouring your marshmallowy starter into your bread bowl. By adding nothing more than flour, water, and salt, you can bake a loaf of bread with such striking flavor complexity and contrast of textures, you will never turn back. Baking sourdough bread is typically not something you dabble in, but dive deeply into.
So Why Bubbling Starter?
Because I love fermented foods, particularly sourdough. I love how by following the ancient process of slowly fermenting grains you are able to access all the nutrients in the bread that are otherwise locked away. My goal is to inspire everyone who comes across bubbling starter to embark on the journey of baking sourdough bread. A collection of recipes is here to help you find a place for sourdough in all you bake. I wish to inspire you to experiment and let your creativity run wild with recipes of your own.
My name is Rachel; I’m a hobby home chef, wife, and mom to two beautiful boys. I have no formal culinary training, but a mild obsession with all things cooking, baking, fermenting, and gardening. Having been trained and practicing as an Manual Osteopath, I have a strong belief the importance of good alignment, wholesome nutrition, and a healthy connection with what we consume. A veggie loving omnivore, I love creating and sharing recipes centered around vegetables, fruits, and grain, occasionally accented by family farmed, antibiotic free meats. My primary focus is, you guessed it, sourdough baking, however I love sharing recipes, tips, tricks, that I have come across over the years that make wholesome home cooking something every family can enjoy.
